Gdzie Google mówi dobranoc | Far from Google (2015)

Ulica Goplany, w toruńskiej dzielnicy Kaszczorek, znajduje się na osiedlu o charakterze podmiejskim, gdzie jedyną zabudowę stanowią wolnostojące budynki jedno lub dwurodzinne: od domów-kostek po nowoczesne wille czy budynki przypominające rezydencje. Z uwagi na m.in. brak wspólnej przestrzeni publicznej, miejsca takie charakteryzuje często „zamykanie” się ludzi w obrębie granic posiadanej przez nich działki.
Odwołując się do nieobecności (z niewiadomych powodów) ulicy Goplany na Google Street View i niejako odwracając zautomatyzowany i, w pewnym sensie, opresyjny charakter pozyskiwania obrazów dla wspomnianej usługi, postanowiłem przetestować postrzeganie granic przez tamtejszych mieszkańców i samemu stworzyć wirtualny spacer po ich ulicy. Z tym zastrzeżeniem, że najpierw starałem się dotrzeć do żyjących tam osób i spytać je o zgodę na uwzględnienie widoku ich działki i domu, a w razie jej braku zamazać dane budynki na wykonanych fotografiach.
Patrząc na końcowy efekt działania trzeba zwrócić uwagę na fakt, że dla zrozumienia zaistniałej sytuacji równie istotne co faktyczny wirtualny spacer, jeżeli nie nawet ważniejsze, stały się zanotowane przeze mnie spostrzeżenia wynikające z interakcji z mieszkańcami tego przedmieścia Torunia, do których zajścia pretekstem była stworzona przeze mnie sytuacja fotograficzna.

Goplany Street is located at the outskirts of Toruń, central Poland, at a typical suburban residential area named Kaszczorek, where the only type of buildings are detached family houses: simple, middle class catalogue-houses, modern-style villas, huge residencies or examples of typical, cube-alike houses from the communist era. Such places, due to the lack of public spaces and work and economic status of its inhabitants, are often characterised by not very strong social bonds and people lives „enclosed” by the fence around their property.
Goplany Street is also, from unknown reason, absent from Google Street View, while every other street in that area is included in that service. I decided to use it as a pretext to photograph the street and create my own version of a virtual walk. Reversing the almost fully automated process in which Google Street View is produced, I started my work talking to dwellers of the area and asking them for a permission to show their house in my artwork. If it was not granted, I blured the house on my photographs.
However my main intention was to test their openness, probe the relations between them, properties they own, the space surrounding them and me, a weird, unfamiliar guy with an awkward question. In this situation my hand-written notes, became even more important then the interactive virtual walk, both of which are parts of the installation.
